What this course offers
This free Functional Skills English Entry Level 3 to Level 2 course is for adults aged 19+ (in August 2026) with few or no qualifications. You’ll develop confident and effective communication skills across reading, writing, speaking and listening, and learn how to apply these skills in everyday life, learning and work.
The course runs on Mondays from 14 September 2026 to 5 July 2027.
What you’ll learn
Speaking, listening and communication
- How to contribute to discussions and make presentations in different situations
- How to present information clearly and adapt your communication to different audiences and purposes
Reading
- How to select and analyse information, ideas, arguments and opinions from different texts
- How to identify audience, purpose, points of view, bias and meaning in texts
- How to compare and summarise information effectively
Writing
- How to write longer documents that communicate information, ideas and opinions clearly
- How to use different writing styles, structures and sentence types, including paragraphs and complex sentences
- How to use spelling, punctuation and grammar accurately

What happens next
You’ll progress from basic literacy skills to higher levels of competence and prepare for further study, employment and practical daily activities.
