What this course offers

This free Horticulture Level 1 course is for learners aged 19+ (in August 2026) with few or no qualifications who may want a career in horticulture.

The course offers a City & Guilds Level 1 Award in Horticulture and takes place at Blaise Plant Nursery, a horticulture centre that provides a therapeutic environment in which to study. You’ll learn horticulture theory in the classroom and take part in practical horticulture activities on site.

The course runs on Tuesdays from 6 October 2026 to 12 January 2027.

What you’ll learn

  • How to prepare soil and apply organic mulch
  • How to sow seeds
  • How to look after plants as they grow
  • How to recognise and identify different weeds and plants
  • Key horticultural terms
  • Employability skills relevant to horticulture

What you’ll do

  • Learn horticulture theory
  • Take part in practical horticulture activities
  • Listen, read and take part in group activities
  • Complete assessments and some homework

What happens next

You’ll have progression opportunities towards a Level 2 Certificate in Horticulture and be provided with advice and resources from a job and careers coach.
