What this course offers
This free online one-week course is for adults aged 19 and over who want an introduction to counselling. It is designed to help you decide whether you would like to progress to a Level 2 qualification or explore counselling as a potential career or area of personal interest.
During the course, you will gain:
- Level 1 Award in Counselling Skills
- Level 1 Award in Approaches to Wellbeing
You will learn about the role of the counsellor, develop communication and active listening skills, practise a range of helping skills, and explore the importance of self-awareness and reflection.
Please note that this qualification does not qualify you to practise as a counsellor.
Applicants should have a good standard of written and spoken English, equivalent to Level 1 or above.

- Explore the role of the counsellor

How you’ll be assessed
Assessment is completed through:
- Written tasks and short questions
- Group discussions
- Practical skills activities and role plays
- A reflective learning journal
What happens next
If you would like to continue your studies, there will be an opportunity to meet the counselling curriculum team to discuss progression to the Level 2 Counselling Skills course. Successful completion of Level 2 is an important step towards further progression within counselling training.
You will also have access to careers advice, guidance and employability support throughout the course to help you take your next step into employment or further training.
