What this course offers

This is a free, tutor‑supported online course that introduces counselling awareness. It focuses on understanding counselling and building strong communication and listening skills. This course does not train you to practise as a counsellor.

What you’ll learn

During the course, you will learn about:

  • The role of counselling and the counsellor
  • Communication skills such as active listening and empathy
  • Professional boundaries and confidentiality
  • Equality, diversity and safeguarding
  • Self‑awareness and reflective practice

You will also complete some online, self‑directed learning with tutor support.

What happens next

By the end of the course, you will have greater confidence in your interpersonal skills and a better understanding of counselling. This course can help you decide whether to move on to further counselling study or related training.

  • Eligibility: Refugee / Asylum seeker &/or Right to live and work in UK/ lived in UK 3 years, Resident of North Somerset, Unemployed &/or claiming a benefit (e.g Universal Credit)
